Our Speech Pathologists also support people with Down Syndrome who may develop Dementia in later years.
Speech therapy could look like:
- Supporting memory in everyday functional tasks, such as remembering your wallet when you leave the house
- Supporting word finding in conversation
- Supporting safe mealtimes through carer education and managing swallowing difficulty
- Working from a communication perspective to minimise behaviours of concern
- Increasing meaningful engagement and reducing the risk of social isolation

How can I access Speech Therapy for someone with Dementia?

If your loved one is under the age of 65, they may be eligible for the NDIS.
Speech Pathology support can be accessed via Improved Daily Living funding in a participant's plan.

If your loved one is over the age of 65 and living at home, they may be eligible for a Home Care Package.
A Speech Pathology assessment can be organised through your package.

Your loved one may access Speech Pathology via an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) Plan through their GP.
An EPC plan supports those with a chronic condition to access up to 5 allied health sessions annually at a subsidised rate.
